WOWPASS is an all-in-one prepaid card service designed for foreign travelers visiting Korea. Instead of relying only on your overseas credit card or carrying a large amount of cash, you can load money onto the card and use it for many everyday offline payments.

For many visitors, the appeal is not that WOWPASS replaces every payment method. It is more useful as a local-friendly backup that helps with cafés, restaurants, convenience stores, cosmetics shops, shopping malls, and other places where card payment is common.

You can usually get a WOWPASS card through a self-service machine after arriving in Korea. These machines are commonly found around places travelers actually pass through, such as airports, subway stations, hotels, convenience stores, and popular tourist areas.

Some visitors prefer to reserve a card before arrival and pick it up later. This can be convenient, but the pickup method is not always the same at every airport or location. “Airport pickup” may mean a machine, a convenience store, a counter, or a specific partner location inside the terminal.

WOWPASS can be topped up in different ways depending on the current service, your location, and the payment method you want to use. A common method is using a WOWPASS machine, where supported foreign currency cash or Korean won can be loaded onto the card.

Mobile top-up options may also be available through the WOWPASS app using supported international cards or mobile wallets. Since supported currencies, limits, fees, and app-based payment methods may change, it is better to check the official app or website before depending on one method.

This is the part many first-time users miss. Your WOWPASS payment balance and your Tmoney transportation balance are not the same wallet. Having enough money for shopping does not automatically mean you can enter the subway gate.

The WOWPASS balance is used when you pay at places like cafés, restaurants, convenience stores, cosmetic shops, and shopping malls. The Tmoney balance is used when you ride public transportation such as subways and buses.

For regular offline payments, WOWPASS works more like a chip-based card than a tap-to-pay card. At many Korean stores, you insert the card into the payment terminal and wait for approval. Tapping the card at a store may use the wrong function or simply fail, depending on the terminal.

For public transportation, the process is the opposite. You tap the card at subway gates and bus terminals, just like a regular Tmoney card. If you are transferring between subway and bus, remember to tap properly when getting on and off where required.

WOWPASS can make a Korea trip smoother, but it works best when you set it up before you urgently need it. After receiving the card, register it in the app, check both balances, and look up nearby machines around your hotel or first sightseeing area.

If the card is lost, app registration gives you more options than carrying cash alone. You may be able to pause the card or manage reissue steps through supported service channels, depending on the current rules and your card status.
